MPS System Ensures Reliable Power for Military

The US Navy required a reliable backup power solution for a critical building and data center. Bay Power Solutions provided a system comprising five 600kW bi-fuel generators, offering a total of 3MW of backup power designed specifically for their building.

This project was designed for redundancy and reliability based on having 5 separate generators. The building load will likely be covered by 3 of the generators, thus having 2 spare generators. Having these spare generators causes 99.9% reliability on critical loads. When it comes to maintaining the units, the Navy will be able to shut down a unit while still staying 100% online.

The generators run on a combination of diesel fuel and natural gas. Once there is load on the generator, at optimal performance, they will run on 30% diesel and 70% natural gas. This allows the site to have less on-site fuel storage of diesel but still benefit from an extended run time. Depending on load, the units will likely run for 7-10 days before needing to be refueled. Also, if there is a disturbance and natural gas is cut off, the units can run on diesel fuel only, which again increases reliability. Overall, it’s a robust system put in place to ensure the reliability of key infrastructure during a utility outage. Bay Power Solutions delivered a valued solution, meeting the project’s stringent requirements and providing redundancy to the Navy’s emergency power system.
